History of Werribee

Werribee was first settled by Europeans in the 1850s for sheep grazing, but the area quickly grew as more and more people moved in. The suburb was named after the Werribee River which flows through it, with its name coming from the Wathawurrung or Boonwurrung words for ‘backbone’ or ‘spine’ – “Wirribi-yaluk”. The Werribee Open Range Zoo was established in 1983, becoming the first open range zoo in Australia.
